Election Commission issues advisory for media on silence period and exit polls

The Election Commission has issued an advisory to all media platforms and broadcasters for the prohibition of the display of election matters in the silence period, which is 48 hours and exit polls for elections to Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and bye-elections to eight Assembly Constituencies. The Commission said that TV, Radio channels and cable networks should ensure that the contents of the programmes being disseminated in the silence period do not contain any material that may be construed as promoting the prospect of any particular party or candidate or influencing the result of the election. This includes the display of any opinion poll. The poll body said that the conduct of exit polls and dissemination of their results by means of print or electronic media is prohibited between 7 AM on 9th April and 6.30 PM on 29th April.
