The Election Commission has rejected the allegations of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, SIR and termed them as false. Earlier a Trinamool Congress delegation led by Ms Banerjee met the Election Commission and raised certain issues relating to the SIR in the State. Sources said that despite the patient hearing by the Chief Election Commissioner, CEC Gyanesh Kumar and the two election Commissioners, Ms Banerjee raised false allegations. CEC responded to her queries and explained that Rule of Law will prevail and anybody taking law into their own hands will be dealt with strictly as per the provisions of law and powers vested in the Commission. Sources added that the Poll Panel emphasised that no pressure, obstruction, or interference of any kind by anyone should be exerted on officers engaged in SIR work in the State.
Later talking to the media after meeting the Election Commission in New Delhi, Ms Banerjee claimed that names of 58 lakh people have been deleted from the electoral rolls during the SIR exercise in the state. She alleged that such voters were not given the opportunity to defend themselves. She said the SIR was not implemented with proper planning in the State as there are reports of mismatch in electoral rolls.
