EC intensifies monitoring of police in West Bengal ahead of Assembly polls

The Election Commission has intensified monitoring of the police administration in West Bengal following recent incidents of violence and unrest in several parts of the state. Strict directives have been issued to officers at all levels ahead of the assembly polls in the state next month. As per instructions from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, all non-bailable arrest warrants must be executed, and special efforts must be made to apprehend the absconding accused.

The Commission has also ordered the identification of potential troublemakers, habitual offenders, and those linked to electoral violence, with preventive measures to be taken in advance. District and subdivision-level officers have been directed to hold regular coordination meetings to strengthen information-sharing.

The Commission has made it clear that all officials on election duty are directly accountable to it, and any negligence or irregularities will invite strict disciplinary action. It has reiterated that no leniency will be tolerated in ensuring free and peaceful elections.

In West Bengal, voting will be conducted in two phases on 23rd and 29th of April. Notification for the first phase of Assembly polls in the state will be issued on Monday.
