Kanishka bombing anniversary: EAM Jaishankar  calls it one of the worst acts of terrorism

On the 40th anniversary of the Kanishka bombing today, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar today paid homage to those who lost their lives in the attack, terming it one of the worst acts of terrorism. On this day in 1985, Air India Flight 182, en route from Montreal, Canada, to London, and then to New Delhi, exploded mid-air over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Ireland, as a result of a cowardly act of terror carried out by Canada-based Khalistani terrorists. In this attack, 329 innocent passengers were killed, including Canadian and other foreign nationals, as well as many Indian nationals, including children. Dr. Jaishankar described this attack as a stark reminder of why the world must show zero tolerance toward terrorism and violent extremism.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri along with his eight-member Indian delegation paid homage to the victims of the Kanishka bombing at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork, Ireland today. Addressing the gathering, Mr Puri termed the tragedy a stain on humanity. He said that it was a deliberate and heinous attack carried out by extremist elements associated with fringe and radical movements who still seek to weaken countries by such actions through terror. The Minister emphasised that terrorism and extremism remain a very real present-day threat.
The delegation led by Mr Puri comprises BJP’s National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, Minister of State in UP Government Baldev Singh Aulakh, MLAs Arvinder Singh Lovely, Gurveer Singh Brar, Narinder Singh Raina, Trilok Singh Cheema and Ambassador in Ireland Akhilesh Mishra. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Canadian Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree also paid homage to the victims.
