External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar today reiterated India’s unwavering support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Cyprus. He also reiterated for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
Dr Jaishankar made these remarks during the meeting with his Cyprus counterpart, Dr Constantinos Kombos, in New Delhi today.
The External Affairs Minister also appreciated Cyprus’s consistent support in the battle against cross-border terrorism. He thanked the government of Cyprus for the strong condemnation after the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the solidarity expressed with India in the fight against terrorism.
Dr Jaishankar further appreciated Cyprus’s consistent support for India’s Permanent membership in an expanded United Nations Security Council and for the membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. He noted that Cyprus is preparing to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) from the first of January next year.
The External Affairs Minister said strengthening ties with both Cyprus and the EU remains a key priority for India. He added that India and Cyprus are trusted friends and reliable partners. He said, the ties have developed into a comprehensive partnership anchored in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a joint strategic vision. It is forward-looking and it is aligned with the interests and aspirations of both countries, he added.
Mr Jaishankar emphasised that India also closely cooperates in regional and multilateral fora, including the United Nations, the European Union, and the Commonwealth frameworks.
The External Affairs Minister said that, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June this year, a Joint Declaration on the Implementation of the Comprehensive Partnership was issued. He said the visit provided guidance for further deepening of the bilateral ties in a range of new areas. He added that both countries have prepared the India-Cyprus Joint Action Plan 2025-2029, which will be reviewed.
