All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS New Delhi, has said that in the last 13 months, the Department of Surgical Disciplines at the institute has performed more than one thousand robotic surgeries, marking a significant advancement in surgical care in the country.
Addressing a press conference today, the Head of the Department of Surgical Disciplines, Professor Sunil Chumber, said robotic surgery has led to a 50 per cent reduction in post-operative pain compared to traditional open surgeries. He added that patients undergoing robotic procedures also experienced 30 per cent shorter hospital stays, resulting in reduced healthcare costs. According to him, there has also been a 40 per cent reduction in surgical site infections due to the use of minimal incisions.
Talking exclusively to Akashvani, Professor Chumber underscored AIIMS’ commitment to enhancing patient care. He said that robotic surgery enables surgeons to carry out complex procedures with unmatched precision and accuracy, while also ensuring that the institution keeps pace with global advancements in medical technology.
Meanwhile, Professor Chumber said that the successful installation of the robotic surgical system has opened new avenues for training young doctors. He said that resident doctors are getting ample opportunities to receive hands-on training in robotic surgery during their residency period. He added that the postgraduate training curriculum in robotic surgery at AIIMS is on par with that of renowned medical institutes across the world.
