Delhi witnesses heavy rain, bringing respite from heat

Heavy rain and strong winds lashed Delhi NCR late last night, bringing much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat. However, uprooted trees and water logging hampered vehicular traffic in several areas of the national capital. The rain was reported hours after the India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of severe thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and squally winds reaching speeds of up to 100 km per hour. The IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in the national capital and neighbouring region over the next 5-6 days.
The weather department also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Karaikal. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Gujarat, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram. Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The IMD also issued warning for dust storm at isolated places over Rajasthan.
