National Capital Delhi today marks its 70th Foundation Day, commemorating that transformative moment when Delhi was reconstituted as a Union Territory on this day in 1956. The move under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956 provided the framework for Delhi’s evolving governance and its distinctive role in India’s polity.
On this occasion, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta extended wishes to the people of Delhi. In a social media post, Ms Gupta said that Delhi is not just the national capital, but also a living identity of good governance, culture and collective harmony. Delhi’s Cabinet Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh also congratulated Delhiites on the occasion, stating that the city has played an important chapter in India’s administrative history. He added that this great city has always held a special place in the country’s history.
