Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chairs meeting of Parliamentary Consultative Committee for MoD on Border Roads Organisation

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today chaired a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence on the Border Roads Organisation in New Delhi. The meeting focused on key issues related to defence infrastructure, connectivity and strategic initiatives to strengthen national security and operational preparedness.

Emphasising the importance of robust border infrastructure, Mr Singh said the BRO is fostering an ecosystem that integrates national security, development and connectivity. He highlighted its role in improving connectivity in the North-East and Left-Wing Extremism-affected areas, noting that it has enhanced mobility for the armed forces while transforming the lives of people in border regions. He also underlined that the BRO has been entrusted with developing infrastructure along the Indo-Myanmar border, covering about 1,600 kilometres.

The Defence Minister reviewed progress under the Border Roads Development Programme 2023-28. He said the initiative is ensuring all-weather connectivity in remote and high-altitude areas, thereby strengthening operational mobility and defence preparedness. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the BRO through enhanced budgetary support, modern equipment and welfare measures for its personnel.

During the meeting, Director General Border Roads Lieutenant General Harpal Singh presented a comprehensive overview of the organisation. He said since its establishment in 1960, the BRO has constructed over 64 thousand kilometres of roads, 1,179 bridges, 22 airfields and seven tunnels, significantly boosting operational readiness and socio-economic development in border areas.

The Committee was informed that improved border infrastructure has accelerated development and contributed to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. The BRO’s work in friendly countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar and Tajikistan was also highlighted.

Highlighting challenges such as limited working seasons, land acquisition and environmental clearances, the Director General said the organisation is focusing on capacity building and modern construction methods to ensure faster and sustainable development. He also underlined welfare measures for BRO personnel, especially casual labourers.
