Death Toll Rises to 41 in Karur Stampede, FM Nirmala Sitharaman Visits Site

Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitaraman today visited Karur, where the death toll has risen to 41 due to a stampede in a TVK political rally on Saturday. Interacting with the media at Karur today, she said that the Prime Minister had asked her and Union Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan to visit Karur to ascertain details about the stampede. She said that it was very unfortunate that many had lost their loved ones, which had hurt many families and also individuals who have been wounded and are under treatment at the hospitals. The Minister informed that the relief amount of two lakh rupees to the bereaved and 50 thousand rupees to the wounded would be given to the families under the Direct Benefit transfer scheme after the District administration provides the details to the Central Government. Expressing her sincere condolences and sorrow on the incident, the Minister said that it was not for her to pass judgements or criticise anyone. Earlier, the Ministers visited the venue of the unfortunate event and also to the houses of the bereaved besides visiting those at hospitals.
