Cyclone Ditwah has left Sri Lanka facing a massive reconstruction challenge, with widespread destruction of homes, roads, bridges and public utilities. The disaster caused heavy loss of life and extensive damage to property, while economic losses are estimated at Rs 210-320 billion, nearly 1% of GDP.
Agriculture has suffered severe crop and livestock losses, industries face damaged machinery and halted production, and tourism-already disrupted by access constraints-has taken a major hit. The combined impact threatens livelihoods across all 25 districts, making long-term recovery and infrastructure rebuilding a national priority.
Speaking in the Parliament yesterday, Opposition MP Dr. Harsha De Silva noted that early assessments indicate Sri Lanka’s total economic losses could reach USD 3 billion or more. He added that a detailed evaluation is expected from the World Bank.
