Curacao scripts history, becomes smallest nation ever to qualify for FIFA World Cup football

Curacao, the Caribbean island scripted history, becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup football. A draw against Jamaica in Kingston sparked celebrations across the island of barely 156,000 people. For 90 tense minutes at the National Stadium, Curacao absorbed wave after Jamaican attack.

Jamaica’s national football team, created a flurry of chances in the second half but Curacao’s defensive discipline remained firm. When the final whistle finally sounded, Curacao’s players collapsed in joy, realising they achieved something few thought possible. Their goalless draw ensured they finished atop Group B with 12 points from six matches, one point ahead of Jamaica. With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams next year, opportunities have opened up for emerging football nations, but Curacao’s achievement still stands out.
