Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has clarified the issue of cancellation of recent bids for the construction of an alternative Coronation Bridge in the Darjeeling district. The ministry said that the Coronation Bridge alternative project is being upgraded from the earlier proposed 4-lane to a 6-lane highway, keeping in mind future traffic and strategic importance.
Following the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Finance (MoRTH), the tender has been deferred to allow the redesign of a wider, safer, and future-ready bridge. Necessary improvements, including enhanced safety measures, are being incorporated, and the project is being strengthened for long-term benefit.
