Controversy Erupts in Bangladesh Over Sudden Removal of Central Bank Governor

A political and economic controversy has erupted in Bangladesh following the sudden removal of Central Bank Governor Ahsan Habib Mansur and the appointment of businessman Md Mostaqur Rahman as the new chief of Bangladesh Bank.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), a non-profit organization questioned the independence and impartiality of the new governor, warning of possible conflicts of interest and raising doubts about his ability to ensure financial stability and good governance in the banking sector. Mansur’s tenure coincided with economic stress marked by falling foreign-exchange reserves, currency volatility and mounting import pressure.
