The Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group have signed a framework agreement in Qatar to move towards a peace deal aimed at ending fighting in eastern Congo. Representatives from both sides signed the agreement today in the Qatari capital Doha.
M23, accused of getting support from neighbouring Rwanda, captured Goma, eastern Congo’s largest city, in January and expanded to North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. Rwana denies the backing.
The fighting has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands more this year, while escalating the risk of a full-scale regional war.
