Colombo’s Gangaramaya Temple Hosts Grand Navam Perahera Festival

The much-anticipated Gangaramaya Temple’s annual Navam Perahera is being held in Colombo. The vibrant cultural procession held today attracts thousands of tourists and Sri Lankans. Eager visitors line the streets to watch dozens of gaily decorated elephants make their way through downtown Colombo, escorted by hundreds of traditional drummers and dancers in an annual parade. The perahera includes several rituals and poojas being held over the last week, ultimately leading to the grand spectacle on the two days.

The procession features traditional artists, monks, and youth in addition to the grand tuskers, which carry the sacred casket. Amidst the evolving traditions, perahera stands as an event promoting harmony among diverse cultures. The Navam Perahera is held on the Navam Poya day, which signifies the appointment of Arahath Sariputta and Arahath Moggallana as the Chief Disciples of Lord Buddha.
