Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, today said that coal gasification will be pivotal in strengthening India’s energy security, reducing import dependence, and supporting industrial growth. He said this while addressing the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 in New Delhi. Mr Reddy underlined India’s vast coal reserves, estimated at nearly four hundred billion tonnes, placing the country among the largest coal holders globally.
He added that coal continues to play a pivotal role in India’s energy landscape, contributing about 55 per cent to the overall energy mix and accounting for nearly 74 per cent of electricity generation in the country. Mr Reddy described coal gasification as a key transformative technology and said that this approach enables more efficient and sustainable use of domestic resources while enhancing economic resilience.
