The Cauvery River Water Council has directed Karnataka to further release 3000 cusecs of Cauvery river water every day to Tamilnadu from September 28th to October 15th. The state has been asked to ensure the quantity at Biligundlu measuring station in Tamilnadu. In an online meeting of the council today, the officials representing Karnataka conveyed the state's inability to release any water from its reservoirs. They informed the council that 161 Talukas in the state are severely hit by drought and 32 among them fall in the Cauvery basin. However, the Tamilnadu side insisted that Karnataka too must reduce its irrigation supply based on the distress proportion and release the shortfall quantity of water immediately.

Considering the 53 percent shortfall of inflows in four reservoirs of Karnataka, the Council asked the state to release 3000 Cusecs every day for 18 days.
