As such, a major initiative of this day is to encourage people to live sustainable lifestyles. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the primary agency that is behind this celebration. Through campaigns, events, and initiatives, World Environment Day inspires individuals and communities to make changes, fostering a sense of urgency and addressing environmental challenges for a sustainable future.

संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने 1972 में स्टॉकहोम सम्मेलन के दौरान 5 जून को विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस के रूप में घोषित किया। यह पर्यावरण संरक्षण को एक प्रमुख मुद्दा बनाने वाला पहला विश्व सम्मेलन था। संयुक्त राष्ट्र पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम (यूएनईपी) की स्थापना उसी वर्ष की गई थी। यह दिवस पहली बार 1973 में ‘केवल एक पृथ्वी’ थीम के तहत मनाया गया था।
This year, the theme of World Environment Day is – ”Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.” All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point.According to the UN Convention, up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
This is why World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.

The researchers have observed nano particles forming following the infusion of particles into a micro droplet collected the formed nano particles and characterised them with advanced methods. This weathering process which in natural environmental conditions would take centuries to happen could be important in study of the origin of life and the microdroplet showers from clouds in the form of rain falling on earth may be of importance to the chemical and biological evolution of the planet. In natural settings, atmospheric water droplets such as clouds and fog, which have charged ions can disintegrate minerals and make them fresh surfaces where different reactions may happen to form new molecules. Prof. Thalappil Pradeep of the Chemistry department said that micro droplets are known to enhance chemical reactions and as a result new chemical bonds form. He said that this was a way to convert sand to soil. The rapid weathering process may be important for soil formation, particularly in the presence of charged aerosols in the atmosphere. Soil forms through gradual weathering of rocks, a process that takes 200- 400 years to produce one centimetre of soil comprising different sized particles. मास्टर मदन
भारत की आज़ादी से पहले के एक प्रतिभाशाली ग़ज़ल और गीत गायक मास्टर मदन की आज पुण्यतिथि है। मास्टर मदन के बारे में बहुत कम लोग जानते है। मास्टर मदन एक ऐसे कलाकार थे जो 1930 के दशक में एक किशोर के रूप में ख्याति प्राप्त करके मात्र 15 वर्ष की उम्र में 1940 के दशक में ही स्वर्गवासी हो गए। ऐसा माना जाता है कि मास्टर मदन को आकाशवाणी और अनेक रियासतों के दरबार में गाने के लिए बहुत ऊँची रकम दी जाती थी। मास्टर मदन उस समय के प्रसिद्ध गायक कुंदन लाल सहगल के बहुत क़रीब थे जिसका कारण दोनों का ही जालंधर का निवासी होना था।
उनके जीवन में केवल 8 गाने ही रिकॉर्ड हो पाये जो आज उपलब्ध है। जिनमें से सार्वजनिक रूप से केवल दो ही गानों की रिकॉर्डिंग सब जगह मिल पाती है।
