Now, time for segment Dateline India, in which we take a look at the developments taking place at the national or global level. Today, we will talk about India’s soft power diplomacy with Maldives.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Male, Maldives, on the second leg of his two-nation visit this morning. Prime Minister Modi was accorded a Guard of Honour at Republic Square, Male. A 21gun salute was also given to Mr. Modi. In a welcome ceremony Maldivian Children presented cultural programmes. Later Prime Minister signed a visitor book at President House. Now both the leaders will hold discussion on various bilateral issues.

 

This marks the Prime Minister’s third visit to Maldives, and the first visit by a Head of State to Maldives during the Presidency of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. In a special gesture, President of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Muizzu received the Prime Minister at the Airport. Prime Minister is Deeply touched by this gesture of President Muizzu. He said that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come.

India has a pre-eminent position in the Maldives, with relations extending to virtually most areas. The importance of India’s strategic role in Maldives is well-recognized, with India being seen as a net security provider. Maldives occupies a special place under “Neighbourhood First” Foreign Policy of India, which aims to bring stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Also, both the nations contribute to the India-led Security And Growth for All in the Region that is, SAGAR vision.

 

ऐतिहासिक रूप से, भारत ने राष्ट्रीय विकास से लेकर सुरक्षा और अर्थव्यवस्था तक, विभिन्न पहलुओं में मालदीव का निरंतर समर्थन किया है। भारत ने दैनिक आवश्यकताओं से लेकर शिक्षा, सुरक्षा और स्वास्थ्य सेवा, जिसमें कोविड-19 टीकों की आपूर्ति भी शामिल है, तक मालदीव को सहायता प्रदान की है।

The Indian Cultural Centre in Male promotes bilateral cultural linkages and awareness between India and Maldives by organizing cultural programmes, cultural seminars, workshops and training engaging India based Gurus, professionals and trainers for Yoga, Hindi & Tamil Language and in performing Arts such as; Indian Classical Vocal Music and dances. When we talk about trade: In April 2025, India approved the highest-ever quotas for essential goods exports to the Maldives, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of its maritime neighbour. Trade between the two nations has grown substantially. In 2023, bilateral trade stood at USD 548 million. This surge was driven by the launch of a dedicated cargo vessel service in September 2020 and several Lines of Credit (LoC) projects initiated since 2021.

 

फरवरी 2022 में भारतीय व्यावसायिक यात्रियों के लिए वीज़ा-मुक्त पहुँच की अनुमति ने व्यावसायिक जुड़ाव को और बढ़ावा दिया। भारत मुख्य रूप से मालदीव को दवाइयाँ, इंजीनियरिंग सामान, सीमेंट, कृषि उत्पाद और निर्माण सामग्री निर्यात करता है। मालदीव से भारत को शुल्क-मुक्त टूना निर्यात अगस्त 2022 में शुरू किया गया था। इसका उद्देश्य द्वीपीय राष्ट्र के समुद्री खाद्य क्षेत्र को बढ़ावा देना है।

 

India provides significant healthcare support to the Maldives through medical infrastructure and services. India has become the preferred destination for Maldivians seeking specialized medical treatments and surgeries.

 

मालदीव में भारतीय प्रवासियों को एक महत्वपूर्ण सेतु के रूप में देखा जाता है जो भारतीय सांस्कृतिक कूटनीति के लिए लाभकारी है। धन प्रेषण, निवेश और रोज़गार सृजन के माध्यम से, भारतीय प्रवासी मालदीव की अर्थव्यवस्था पर महत्वपूर्ण प्रभाव डालते हैं।

 

Through education sector, India has been a traditional partner for the Maldives in human resource development across sectors for decades. Several Maldivian youths acquire their higher education in India Universities every year. Indian teachers are popular at Maldivian schools across islands for decades.

भारत ने 2004 की सुनामी और दिसंबर 2014 में माले में जल संकट के दौरान मालदीव की सहायता करने में प्रथम भूमिका निभाई थी। इन घटनाओं ने किसी भी अन्य देश की तुलना में संकट के समय मालदीव की सहायता करने में भारत की निकटता और क्षमता के लाभों को स्थापित किया है और मालदीव की सरकार और जनता द्वारा इसे व्यापक रूप से स्वीकार किया गया है।

 

India’s swift dispatch of 30,000 doses of measles vaccine in Jan 2020 to prevent an outbreak in the Maldives, and India’s rapid and comprehensive assistance to the Maldives during COVID19 pandemic further reinforced India’s credentials of being the “first responder”.

 

अब बात करते हैं दोनों देशों के बीच क्षमता निर्माण और प्रशिक्षण की-

 

भारत मालदीवियन राष्ट्रीय रक्षा बल (एमएनडीएफ) को सबसे अधिक प्रशिक्षण अवसर प्रदान करता है, जो उनकी लगभग 70% रक्षा प्रशिक्षण आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करता है। एमएनडीएफ के अधिकारियों को भारत में विभिन्न रक्षा अकादमियों जैसे एनडीए, आईएमए, ओटीए, आईएनए, एएफएमसी आदि में प्रशिक्षित किया गया है। एमएनडीएफ भारतीय रक्षा बलों के साथ विभिन्न संयुक्त गतिविधियों जैसे संयुक्त गश्त, संयुक्त अभ्यास, मादक द्रव्य-विरोधी अभियान, समुद्री-सवार कार्यक्रम, मानवीय सहायता और आपदा राहत अभ्यास, साहसिक शिविर, नौकायन रेगाटा आदि में भी भाग लेता रहा है।

 

Apart from this, India-Maldives Defence Cooperation also extends to the areas of Joint Exercises, Maritime Domain Awareness, gifting of hardware, and infrastructure development.

In Kerala, the initiative of a college to enroll all its students in Central Government flagship scheme PM Suraksha Bima Yojana is becoming a model for other institutions.

 

Markaz Arts and Science College in Malappuram District, Kerala, has taken a commendable step to ensure enrolment of all its graduate and postgraduate students under the Government of India’s flagship insurance scheme, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.

 

This initiative was launched during an awareness programme jointly organised by the Palakkad Field Office of the Central Bureau of Communication and the Malappuram District Lead Bank at the college campus.

 

As a first step, arrangements were made to open new savings bank accounts for students who do not currently hold active ones. College authorities have stated that nearly 700 students will be enrolled in PMSBY within the next two days.

बिहार को बौद्ध धर्म और संस्कृति को लेकर एक नई सौगात इस महीने के अंतिम सप्ताह में मिलने वाली है। वैशाली जिले में नवनिर्मित बुद्ध सम्यक दर्शन संग्रहालय-सह-स्मृति स्तूप का उद्घाटन 29 जुलाई को होगा। सुनते हैं हमारे संवाददाता की एक रिपोर्ट :

 

वैशाली जिले में नवनिर्मित भगवान बुद्ध के दर्शन और ज्ञान का प्रतीक यह संग्रहालय सह स्तूप अपने आप में अनूठा होगा। यह ऐतिहासिक स्मारक वैश्विक बौद्ध समुदाय के लिए श्रद्धा और आकर्षण का केंद्र बनेगा। 72 एकड़ भूमि में फैले इस भव्य परिसर को 550 करोड़ रुपये से अधिक की लागत से विकसित किया गया है। यह स्थल ऐतिहासिक पुष्करणी तालाब और मड स्तूप के समीप स्थित है। संग्रहालय के प्रथम तल पर भगवान बुद्ध का पावन अस्थि कलश स्थापित किया जाएगा, जो 1958 से 1962 के दौरान खुदाई में प्राप्त हुआ था । यह स्मारक का प्रमुख केंद्र बिंदु होगा।

 

मुख्यमंत्री नीतीश कुमार 29 जुलाई को इसका उद्घाटन करेंगे। बताया जा रहा है कि बोध गया कि महाबोधि मंदिर के बाद यह राज्य में बौद्ध धर्म के लिए एक प्रमुख स्मारक होगा। उद्घाटन समारोह में चीन, जापान, श्रीलंका, थाईलैंड, नेपाल, तिब्बत, म्यांमार, भूटान, वियतनाम, मलेशिया, लाओस, कंबोडिया, मंगोलिया, बांग्लादेश और इंडोनेशिया सहित 15 बौद्ध देशों के भिक्षुओं के शामिल होने की संभावना है। पूरी तरह पत्थरों से निर्मित यह स्तूप राजस्थान से लाए गए बलुआ पत्थरों को जोड़कर बनाया गया है। यह संरचना आधुनिक भूकंपरोधी तकनीकों से सुसज्जित है। परिसर में ध्यान केंद्र, पुस्तकालय, विजिटर्स केंद्र, संग्रहालय ब्लॉक, एम्फीथियेटर, कैफेटेरिया, 500 किलोवाट सौर ऊर्जा संयंत्र, पार्किंग तथा अन्य सुविधाएं भी विकसित की गई हैं। ओडिशा के कलाकारों द्वारा निर्मित भगवान बुद्ध की प्रतिमा इस स्थल की विशिष्ट पहचान होगी। यह स्तूप न केवल वैशाली को वैश्विक बौद्ध मानचित्र पर प्रतिष्ठित करेगा, बल्कि स्थानीय पर्यटन, संस्कृति और रोजगार को भी नई दिशा देगा। परिक्रमा के लिए पटना से धर्मेंद्र कुमार राय।

In Ladakh, as part of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations, a solemn and emotionally resonant event was held today at Lamochan View Point in Drass.

 

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Flag Foundation of India in the presence of Lt General Hitesh Bhalla, General Officer Commanding, 14 Corps, who served as the Chief Guest. On this occasion, Major General Ashim Kohli (Retd.), CEO of the Flag Foundation of India and a Kargil War veteran who fought in the Khalubar sector, shared his reflections and paid rich tributes to the martyrs. He described this flag hoisting as the most memorable of his career, noting the visibility of iconic war sites such as Tiger Hill, Batra Top, and Tololing from the Lamochan point. He also briefed the gathering about the activities of the Flag Foundation of India, important aspects of the Flag Code of India, and presented a souvenir to the Chief Guest.

 

The event also featured the felicitation of “Team Stringmo”, a group of young female artists from Kargil, led by mentor Sajjad Hussain Bob, for their efforts in spreading patriotic spirit through art and painting by the Cheif Guest. Later, Lt General Hitesh Bhalla honoured the Veer Naris and Next of Kins of Kargil martyrs, in a deeply moving tribute to the families who have borne the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. A drone-launched precision guided missile has been successfully test-fired by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at a test range in Andhra Pradesh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, informed over social media today, that the flight trials were carried out in Kurnool. More from our correspondent;

 

The 12.5-kg fire-and-forget air-to-surface missile is powered by a compact dual-thrust solid propulsion unit, enabling it to reach a maximum range of 4 km during daytime operations and 2.5 km at night. It also incorporates a two-way datalink for communication and offers multiple warhead options to engage a variety of static and moving targets.

 

Designed, developed and tested by DRDO, the ULPGM-V3, also referred to as ULM-ER (extended-range variant), is an advanced version of DRDO’s UAV-launched precision munition, and features passive homing using an imaging infrared seeker, allowing for accurate engagement in both day and night conditions. Equity benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty, closed in the red for a second consecutive session today, weighed down by mixed global cues. Investor sentiment remained subdued, amid continued selling by foreign institutional investors and lingering global trade uncertainties.

 

The 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 721 points, or 0.90 percent, to close at 81,463. The NSE Nifty 50 also slipped sharply, losing 225 points, or 0.90 percent, to end the session at 24,837.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

 

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (/ˈkoʊlərɪdʒ/ KOH-lə-rij) passed away on this day in 1834. He was an English poet, literary critic, philosopher, and theologian who was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets with his friend William Wordsworth. He also shared volumes and collaborated with Charles Lamb, Robert Southey, and Charles Lloyd. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and “Kubla Khan”, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria.Coleridge coined many familiar words and phrases, including “suspension of disbelief”.

Edward James Corbett

 

Edward James Corbett was born on this day in 1875. He was an Anglo-Indian hunter and author. He gained fame through hunting and killing several man-eating tigers and leopards in Northern India, as detailed in his bestselling 1944 memoir Man-Eaters of Kumaon. In his later years, he became an outspoken advocate of the nascent conservation movement. Born in Naini Tal, Corbett explored and hunted in the jungles of India in childhood. He shot his first man-eater in 1907 and continued to hunt and kill such animals over the next four decades. Animals such as the Champawat Tiger, the Leopard of Rudra Prayag, and the Panar Leopard had taken hundreds of victims in the divisions of Kumaon and Garhwal, before their deaths at Corbett’s hands. Man-Eaters of Kumaon, which detailed several such hunts, became an international bestseller; it was followed by several other books and was adapted into a 1948 Hollywood film. Corbett increasingly disdained what he saw as the rapacious extermination of India’s forests and wildlife, and fervently promoted wildlife photography as an alternative to trophy hunting. He played a major role in the creation of India’s first wildlife reserve in 1934; it was renamed Jim Corbett National Park after his death.

आज भारतीय यांत्रिक इंजीनियर मनमोहन सूरी की पुण्यतिथि है। उन्होंने ‘सूरी ट्रांसमिशन’ का आविष्कार किया था। यह एक हाइड्रोमैकेनिकल ट्रांसमिशन यूनिट है, जिसने डीजल इंजनों की दक्षता बढ़ाने का कार्य किया। इस तकनीक को ग्यारह देशों में 36 पेटेंट विनिर्देशों के लिए जाना जाता है। मनमोहन सूरी को वर्ष 1961 में भारत सरकार ने ‘पद्म श्री’ से सम्मानित किया था।

Givanildo Vieira de Sousa was born on this day in 1986. also known as Hulk he, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Atlético Mineiro. After starting out professionally with Vitória and then playing three years in Japan, he played several seasons in Portugal with Porto, winning ten titles – including the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League and three national championships. He was crowned the league’s top scorer once. In 2012, he joined Russian Premier League side Zenit Saint Petersburg for €60 million, winning all three domestic honours and being named the competition’s best player and being top scorer, once each. He was transferred to Shanghai SIPG for an Asian record €58.6 million in 2016.

Walter Andrew Brennan was born on this day in 1894. He was an American actor and singer. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Come and Get It (1936), Kentucky (1938) and The Westerner (1940), making him one of only seven actors to win more than two Academy Awards, and the only male or female actor to win three awards in the supporting actor category. Brennan was also nominated for his performance in Sergeant York (1941). Other noteworthy performances were in To Have and Have Not (1944), My Darling Clementine (1946), Red River (1948) and Rio Bravo (1959). On television, he starred in the sitcom The Real McCoys (1957–1963).
