DATELINE 01 – International Day of Parliamentarism :
The International Day of Parliamentarism or IPU is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.

In December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 30 June International Asteroid Day in order to observe each year at the international level the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard.

International Asteroid Day aims to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard and to inform the public about the crisis communication actions to be taken at the global level in case of a credible near-Earth object threat.
The General Assembly’s decision was made based on a proposal by the Association of Space Explorers, which was endorsed by Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

In a bid to make the local artisans self-reliant, the department of handicrafts under the Ministry of Textiles is organizing over a month-long design and development workshop in Sepahijala district of the state.
“The village of Pal Para does not need any introduction, as it is one such village in the state which is known for making the idols of goddess durga. The villagers are inherently into the business of making beautifully designed idols of goddess Durga which have a huge demand across the state. After West Bengal, it is Tripura where the Durga Puja is celebrated on a large scale by the predominantly Bengali populace and even by the indigenous people from the state. An interesting aspect from the point of view of the clay that is used to make these idols is that it is procured from the surface of the ponds in the vicinity. Experts say that the clay used to make the idols is smooth and is ideal to make different types of terracotta products. The design and development workshop which is underway at Pal Para specifically meant for the local terracotta artisans emphasizes on market oriented products which have good demand in other major cities of the country which can help them become atmanirbhar. Around 30 artisans from Pal Para are being imparted training in this 50 day workshop. Apart from the training, the artisans are also being given a stipend of 300 rupees on daily basis. Such workshops to harness the local talent will certainly help the people from this northeastern state to come at par with those from the mainland India and showcase their skills in days to come. “Northeast’s first emergency landing facility to be operational by October this year in Dibrugarh district of Assam. This 4.2 kilometer long Emergency Landing Facility is being built on a four-lane highway stretch between Moran and Demow. “To strengthen our national security and as part of a nationwide plan, the Central Government is establishing emergency landing facilities all over the country for the Indian Air Force at every 50 to 100 kilometers of stretch. The first emergency landing facility of the entire North Eastern part of India to come up at Dibrugarh district of Assam. According to official sources, this facility will be fully operational by October this year after final technical clearance. This strategic emergency landing facility project is a collaborative effort between the Indian Air Force and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. The facility is designed to serve both military and civilian purposes. Fighter jets like Rafale, MIG, Tejash, and Hercules will be able to land on this landing facility. An Air Traffic Control tower has also been built as part of the project. During emergencies, civilian aircraft can also utilise the facility. Under normal conditions, it will remain open for regular public transport. Two more such emergency landing facilities will be developed by the Centre in the State, one between Tihu and Barama and another between Nagaon and Lumding. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has now stepped in to assist with the conservation of rhino populations in the Jaldapara and Gorumara National Parks. Bhaskar J.V., Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), North Bengal, said, Discussions have begun with WII to develop a scientifically managed breeding plan. Through the Rhino Management Project, the goal is to increase genetic variation among the rhinos and restore their reproductive potential and overall health. According to the Forest Department, the prolonged cohabitation of rhinos from the same genetic lineage in both Jaldapara and Gorumara has led to a stagnation in gene pool diversity. As a result, these animals are now showing signs of reduced fertility and shorter lifespans. Although the average natural lifespan of the species can exceed 40 years, many rhinos in North Bengal are dying prematurely. Another significant concern is the skewed sex ratio. Female rhinos greatly outnumber males. There are also persistent difficulties in accurately identifying the gender of newborns, which hinders planned breeding efforts. The Forest Department remains hopeful that inter-regional breeding and a scientifically guided programme under the supervision of WII will help overcome these challenges and secure a healthier future for the one-horned rhinos of North Bengal. The benchmark domestic equity indices took a breather today, halting their four-day gaining streak. Both the indices closed with losses of around half a per cent amid mixed global cues and profit-booking. The 30-share index at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, shed 452 points to close at 83 thousand 606. The National Stock Exchange Nifty-50, lost 121 points. In the Indian bullion market, 24-karat gold was trading up at 96,280 rupees per 10 grams, and silver 999 fine was also trading up at 1,06,720 rupees per kilogram, when reports last came in.

Also known as the “Grand Old Man of India” and “Unofficial Ambassador of India”, was an Indian independence activist, political leader, merchant, scholar and writer. He was one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress and served as its 2nd, 9th, and 22nd President from 1886 to 1887, 1893 to 1894 and 1906 to 1907. He was the Diwan of Baroda from 1874, before moving to England, where he was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons, representing Finsbury Central between 1892 and 1895. He was the first person of Indian descent to be a British MP. His book Poverty and Un-British Rule in India brought attention to his theory of the Indian “wealth drain” into Britain.
