On February 13th, people from all around the world are celebrating World Radio Day. It is a celebration of one of the most powerful and timeless mediums of communication—radio. Radio has played a crucial role in connecting people, no matter where they are. It is used for spreading information, providing entertainment, and keeping people updated on current events. Beyond that, radio serves as a vital tool for education, awareness, and bringing communities together, especially in remote areas where other forms of communication may not be easily accessible.
While we talk about Radio, let’s not forget Akashvani’s contribution as the national broadcaster.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) proclaimed World Radio Day in 2011, officially recognising the impact of radio on spreading information. The date, February 13th, was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the establishment of United Nations Radio in 1946. UNESCO’s decision to declare World Radio Day aimed to raise awareness about the importance of radio in all its forms, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The initiative was also launched as a way to remind us of radio’s timeless ability to reach vast audiences and provide a universal platform for people, regardless of geography or resources.
भारत में रेडियो का इतिहास
भारत में रेडियो का प्रसारण वास्तव में आकाशवाणी के अस्तित्व में आने से लगभग 13 साल पहले शुरू हुआ था. जून 1923 में मुम्बई के बॉम्बे के रेडियो क्लब ने देश में पहली बार रेडियो प्रसारण किया. इसके पांच महीने बाद कोलकाता रेडियो क्लब की स्थापना की गई। ब्रॉडकास्टिंग कंपनी IBC 23 जुलाई, 1927 को अस्तित्व में आई, लेकिन तीन साल से भी कम समय में इसे बंद करना पड़ा।
अप्रैल 1930 में, उद्योग और श्रम विभाग के तहत भारतीय प्रसारण सेवा ने प्रायोगिक आधार पर अपना संचालन शुरू किया. लियोनेल फील्डन को अगस्त 1935 में प्रसारण … का पहला कंट्रोलर नियुक्त किया गया था। अगले महीने आकाशवाणी मैसूर में एक निजी रेडियो स्टेशन स्थापित किया गया था। 8 जून, 1936 को ‘इंडियन स्टेट ब्रॉडकास्टिंग सर्विस’ ऑल इंडिया रेडियो (AIR) बन गई।

In Kerala, the second edition of the International Energy Festival was held last week in the capital city Thiruvananthapuram. The festival focussed on various energy efficiency model. A report.
The three-day International Energy Festival was hosted by the Energy Management Centre, Kerala. The festival showcased innovative energy efficiency models and focused on this year’s theme, “Towards a Carbon-Free Kerala. Inaugurating the festival the State Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty said that Kerala is setting an ambitious target to source 50% of its electricity requirements from renewable energy by 2030, aiming to serve as a model for the nation. The minister emphasised the state’s long-term vision to achieve 100% renewable energy-powered status by 2040 and net carbon neutrality by 2050.The Minister also presented the energy conservation awards. The three-day event featured technical sessions, panel discussions, training programs, the Kerala Students Energy Congress, competitions for students and exhibitions. Currently, Kerala generates only 30% of its electricity domestically, with most imported power coming from fossil fuel sources. By 2027, the state aims to add 3,000 MW through solar and wind energy projects and 1,500 MW from hydroelectric projects. Energy policies are also being designed to ensure the benefits of energy development reach the marginalised communities, including those in remote tribal settlements. The 44th Chess Olympiad held in 2022 gave Chennai not only an international reputation but also took the game to the nook and corner of the State. The first FIDE trainer in India and the fifth World Amateur Chess Champion, Dr.Ebenezer Joseph said that the game slows down hyperactive children and enables them to channelise their energy and thoughts making them think and strategise their every move. Benchmark domestic equity indices today ended nearly flat, giving up gains secured in intraday trade. The 30-share index at Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, fell 32 points to close at 76,139.
