THE ARMED Forces Veterans’ Day is celebrated every year on January 14 across India to pay respects to the armed forces veterans for their selfless duty and sacrifices and to reinforce solidarity towards the next of kin of the bravehearts.
पहला सशस्त्र बलों का पूर्व सैनिक दिवस 14 जनवरी 2017 को रक्षा मंत्रालय के तहत एक अखिल भारतीय कार्यक्रम के रूप में आयोजित किया गया था। इसका उद्देश्य त्रि-सेवा के पूर्व सैनिकों की अडिग समर्पण और बलिदानों को सलाम करना था, साथ ही इन साहसी सैनिकों के परिवारों के साथ एकजुटता दिखाना था।

14 जनवरी को पूर्व सैनिक दिवस के रूप में मनाने के लिए चुना गया क्योंकि यह वही दिन था, जब 1953 में फील्ड मार्शल के. एम. करीप्पा, जो स्वतंत्रता के बाद भारतीय सेना के पहले कमांडर-इन-चीफ थे, ने राष्ट्र की सेवा में अपने गौरवमयी कार्यकाल के बाद सेवानिवृत्त होकर एक पूर्व सैनिक के रूप में पहचान बनाई।

Notably, the Field Marshal steered the formation of the Directorate of Resettlement later came to be known as Directorate General Resettlement, a key organization under the Department of Ex-servicemen Welfare of the Ministry of Defence. The body looks after the various opportunities, training and policy making on the subject of resettlement of retired soldiers.
दिलचस्प बात यह है कि अगले दिन, यानी 15 जनवरी, को सेना दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है, क्योंकि इसी दिन 1949 में फील्ड मार्शल करीप्पा ने अंतिम ब्रिटिश कमांडर-इन-चीफ जनरल सर एफ. आर. आर. बुचर से भारतीय सेना की कमान संभाली और स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले भारतीय कमांडर-इन-चीफ बने।
The day is marked by programmes held across major military stations across the country and major cities. These programmes include ceremonial parades, gatherings of veterans, Veer Naris and their families. These programmes give opportunities to military formations to interact with the veterans and their families at their respective stations.
महाराष्ट्र में, केंद्रीय मंत्री नितिन गडकरी ने कहा कि पूर्व सैनिकों का उनके रक्षा सेवा काल का योगदान अविस्मरणीय है और इसने देश के गौरवमयी इतिहास और परंपरा को बरकरार रखा है। वे आज नागपुर के वायुसेना नगर में भारतीय वायुसेना के मुख्यालय में 9वें सशस्त्र बलों के पूर्व सैनिक दिवस के अवसर पर संबोधित कर रहे थे।

“In India, the Armed Forces Veterans Day celebration commenced from the year 2017. The day has been chosen as Veterans Day as it was on this day, 72 years ago that the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Late Gen KM Cariappa hung his uniform the Nation from 15th January 1949 to 14th January 1953. The title ‘Veteran’ is not just a simple word to describe a former soldier but it is more than a designation. It is a symbol of honour earned through unwavering dedication and sacrifice. On this occasion, Veterans are invited to the local military organizations to honour them for their services. One such programme is beind held at Amritsar Miulitary Station today and another will be organized tomorrow at Jalandhar Cantonment. It is an occasion where the servicing officers/personnel interact with veterans to learn from them and strengthen their bonds. Camps of various services to are also being organized to resolve issues of the Veterans. The concept of Veterans Day emerged from a similar concept prevalent in the United States. Schools and Colleges organize special programs to honour and respect the Veterans. As a citizen of India, we all must remember to honour our veterans of Indian Armed Forces, remember those who have made supreme sacrifice to protect our motherland. This festival is known by different names across India.
Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bihu, and Uttarayan are being celebrated with great fervor across the country.
Makar Sankranti has brought people together to take holy dips in sacred rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna.
In Tamil Nadu, the vibrant festival of Pongal is in full swing. Families are cooking the traditional sweet dish, Pongal, in decorated earthen pots, offering it to the Sun God as a gesture of gratitude.
In Assam, Magh Bihu, or Bhogali Bihu, is being celebrated with traditional fervor. In Gujarat and other parts of western India, Uttarayan, the festival of kites, has filled the skies with vibrant colors.

आज मकर संक्रांति अमृत स्नान के अवसर पर प्रयागराज के त्रिवेणी संगम में दोपहर 12 बजे तक एक करोड़ 60 लाख से अधिक लोगों ने पवित्र स्नान किया। अमृत स्नान में लाखों भक्त और संत शामिल हो रहे हैं। आज सुबह बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने गंगा आरती में भी भाग लिया।
Now, let us begin our parikrama, we first take you to Rajasthan a large number of devotees are taking a holy dip at Pushkar in Ajmer, Kolayat in Bikaner, Galta in Jaipur and Beneshwar Dham in Dungarpur. On Makar Sankranti, enthusiasm is being seen among children and youth as well as elders for traditional kite flying in many districts of the state including Jaipur. The Kite Festival is being organized today at the Jal Mahal in Jaipur by the Tourism Department. An exhibition of kites has been set up during the festival. Meanwhile, all veterinary polyclinics will remain open throughout the day today for the treatment of birds injured due to kite flying in the capital Jaipur.
अब उत्तर-पूर्व की ओर चलते हैं, त्रिपुरा में, राज्य के कई क्षेत्रों में महिलाओं ने अपने आंगन को चावल के दानों के पाउडर, पानी और अन्य रंगों के मिश्रण से अल्पना या रंगोली कला से सजाया है।
बांग्ला कैलेंडर के अनुसार, पौष मास का अंतिम दिन और माघ मास का पहला दिन राज्य के ग्रामीण इलाकों में फसल कटाई के बाद के उत्सव के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

“In Sabarimala, today the day of Makaravilakku, the annual festival on Makar Sankranti day, it is believed that Lord Ayyappa asserts himself as a holy light to bless his devotees.The most popular legend is that after defeating demon Mahishasura, Ayyappa merged with the Dharma Shastha Murti at the Sabarimala Temple on the Makarajyothi day. Makaravilakku is the Jyothi that appears at Ponnambalameddu three times on Makar Sankranti day after evening puja. Makara Jyothi is the star that appears on the sky during the Puja. The Makarasamkrama Pooja will take place today evening. Over 1.5 lakh devotees are expected to take part in the ceremony and witness makara jyothi, the holy light.As Sabarimala Ayyappa temple is gearing up for the grand festival, coordinated efforts by various departments and Ayyappa devotees are being done to ensure a safe pilgrimage.All necessary arrangements are being done in the temple for the auspicious day.Strict crowd control measures have been implemented to avoid congestion, and barricades have been set up at key vantage points for devotees to witness the Makara Jyothi. Pilgrims are advised to view the Makara Jyothi only from designated areas. In Jammu & Kashmir, the administration, police, Narcotics Bureau and other law enforcing agencies have been taking tough measures against drug peddlers and also working on rehabilitation of victims of drug and substance abuse. The civil society across the Union Territory are in favour of stringent action against drug traffickers, on the other hand, they emphasize the urgent need to rehabilitate the victims of drug and substance abuse. Here is a report from our Correspondent in Srinagar:
“The Jammu & Kashmir Police have been consistently cracking down on drug smugglers. Director General Police, Nalin Prabhat, in a recently held 12th J&K level Narco Coordination (NCORD) Committee meeting revealed that actions against drug smugglers have increased manifold. The Police have been attaching the properties of the accused persons. The illegal assets worth over Rs 12.04 crore were attached last year, with properties worth Rs 50 crore currently under attachment process. 274 drug kingpins were booked under Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS Act) last year compared to 270 in 2023 and 195 in 2022. As part of creating awareness among common masses and to complement the efforts of the Police in combating drug menace, there is a call from civil society for rehabilitation of the victims of drug abuse and rigorous punishment to the narcotic peddlers. Benchmark domestic equity indices today ended on a positive note, snapping their four-day losing streak. The 30-share index at Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, gained 170 points, or 0.22 percent, to close at 76,500. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 added 90 points, almost 0.4 percent, to settle at 23,176. In the Global Crude Market, Brent Crude was trading 0.48 down at 80 dollars and 62 cents per barrel, and WTI Crude also fell over 0.4 percent to trade at 78 dollars and 47 cents per barrel, when reports last came in.

आज प्रसिद्ध शायर मुनव्वर राणा की पुण्यतिथि है। (जन्म- 26 नवम्बर, 1952; मृत्यु- 14 जनवरी, 2024) वे भारतीय उर्दू कवि थे। उनकी कविता ‘शहदबा’ के लिए उन्हें साल 2014 में ‘साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित किया गया था। मुनव्वर राणा ने उर्दू और अवधी में लिखा, लेकिन फ़ारसी और अरबी शब्दावली से परहेज किया जो उर्दू को हिंदी से अलग करती है। यह उनकी कविता को भारतीय श्रोताओ के लिए सुलभ बनाता है और गैर-उर्दू क्षेत्रों में आयोजित कवि सम्मेलनों में उनकी लोकप्रियता को बताता है।

कैफी आज़मी एक उर्दू के शायर थे। कैफी का असली नाम अख्तर हुसैन रिजवी था। उत्तर प्रदेश के आजमगढ़ जिले के छोटे से गांव मिजवां में 14 जनवरी 1919 को उनका जन्म हुआ था। उन्हें गांव के सिधेसाधे माहौल में कविताएं पढ़ने का शौक लगा। भाइयों ने प्रोत्साहित किया तो खुद भी लिखने लगे और अपने भाइयो को भी बताना शुरू किया। 11 साल की उम्र में उन्होंने अपनी पहली गज़ल लिखी। किशोर होते-होते मुशायरे में शामिल होने लगे। वर्ष 1936 में साम्यवादी विचारधारा से प्रभावित हुए। मई 1947 में इनका विवाह शौकत से हुआ। आर्थिक रूप से संपन्न और साहित्यिक संस्कारों वाली शौकत को कैफी के लेखन ने प्रभावित किया। उनके यहां एक बेटी और एक बेटे का जन्म हुआ, जिनका नाम शबाना और बाबा है। शबाना आज़मी हिंदी फिल्मों की एक अज़ीम अदाकारा बनीं। क़ैफ़ी आज़मी को राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के अलावा कई बार फिल्मफेयर अवॉर्ड भी मिला। 1974 में भारत सरकार ने उन्हें पद्मश्री से सम्मानित किया।
