The theme for International Translation Day 2024 is “Translation, an Art Worth Protecting: Moral and Material Rights for Indigenous Languages.”
This theme will focus on the significance of safeguarding indigenous languages and their translations. It will discuss ethical concerns related to data collection, copyright, and the use of translated works.

On 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development, and declared 30 September as International Translation Day.

Why 30 September? Because this day celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator, who is considered the patron saint of translators. Jerome died near Bethlehem on 30 September 420.
St. Jerome a priest from North-eastern Italy, he is known mostly for his endeavor of translating most of the Bible into Latin from the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. He was a notable scholar responsible for translating the Bible into Latin, thus making it more accessible to a wider audience.

While indigenous peoples make up only five per cent of the world’s population, they speak the majority of its 7,000 languages – an estimated six thousand languages. According to the United Nations, more than 30 per cent of the world’s languages are expected to disappear by the end of this century due to a lack of speakers, teaching, literature, transmission or political commitment. Not only does the loss of an indigenous language impoverish linguistic diversity, it also leads to an irremediable loss of traditional knowledge.

Translating also means choosing. One translates some texts rather than others and into some languages rather than others. Is translation therefore also a reflection of relationships of domination? That is a food for thought.

The railways has opted for the services of a Chennai based start up . Plansys technologies that deploys robots and drones underwater. It was founded in 2015 by IIT-M batch mates. Jhunjhunwala, CEO of the start up said that the focus is on developing underwater robotics systems which are both remotely operated and autonomous. It is basically a drone platform or underwater robotics platform whose capabilities are defined by tests undertaken.
“The platform has a structural integrity testing of high value assets such as bridges, dams, ports, processing industry, refinery assets and whatever is underwater. They also check the health of it so that decision makers can take a call on repair and maintenance. Prior to the use of robots and drones, the industry mostly used divers. Plansys sees the next big opportunity in India’s defence sector. Under water drones for defence are a niche field and it is pursuing it with the defence ministry. He had several uncredited roles from 1951 to 1953 before starring as a rebellious son attempting to win his father’s approval in East of Eden (1955). In Rebel Without a Cause (1955), he portrayed a teenager struggling with his emotions and feeling frustrated with his family and social life. His last lead role was playing a Texan rancher who discovered oil and became rich in Giant (1956). Dean died in a car crash in 1955 and became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in East of Eden. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 18th best male movie star of Golden Age Hollywood. Dean’s film roles, fashion, and manners became celebrated in popular culture and influenced the development of rock and roll in the 1950s and 1960s.
