Cyclone Montha is pounding Andhra Pradesh with torrential rains, fierce winds, and flooding, after intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 90-100 kilometre per hour, gusting up to 110 kilometre per hour. The storm, moving north-northwestwards, is expected to make landfall near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam by this evening. A report:
Heavy to very heavy rain since morning has lashed Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, and parts of Rayalaseema. An 8-kilometre beach road between Kakinada and Uppada has been damaged, Sea conditions remain rough, with a storm surge along the Krishna and Godavari river basins, prompting restrictions on beach access and a ban on fishing. Danger signal number seven has been hoisted at Kakinada port, with lower alerts for all other ports, putting the entire coastline on high alert. The state government has launched massive rescue and relief operations, evacuating people from cyclone prone villages to relief camps stocked with food and water. The Odisha Government is leaving no stone unturned for a zero casualty in the state during the process of severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ which is likely to cross the southern districts of Odisha tonight. More than 11,000 people including 1,871 pregnant women have been shifted to safer places, The administration is focussing on eight red zone districts, which are most likely to be affected due to the severe cyclonic storm. Senior officers have been assigned to each ‘red zone’ district to oversee cyclone management. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has asked all district administrations to maintain continuous coordination with the State Emergency Operations Centre and ensure round-the-clock presence of field officials. As Cyclonic storm Montha turned severe Local warning signal number four has been hoisted at Chennai,. Ennore and Kattupalli Ports today. In Cuddalore and Nagapattinam, distant warning signal number 2 with section signal number two has been hoisted. Distant warning signal number two has been hoisted at Pamban, Thoothukudi, Karaikal and Puducherry ports. Fishing activity has been completely stopped in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts. The Met department has warned of strong surface winds in North Coastal Tamilnadu and adjoining districts. Chennai and surrounding areas have been receiving Light to moderate showers today. Rains measuring upto 19 cm have been recorded in catchment areas of the water bodies around Chennai. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw today highlighted that India’s smartphone exports reached a record 1.8 billion US dollars in the last month. Senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister will address multiple election rallies tomorrow in Darbhanga, Samastipur, and Begusarai. Under the next gen GST reforms, the government has provided a major boost to Punjab’s economy by providing significant relief across various sectors. Under the new tax structure, GST on agro and food commodities, including milk, butter, ghee, curd, cheese, UHT milk, infant food, dairy whitener, and chocolate, have been slashed to 5 percent from the previously taxed 12 percent. This tax relief on key products of Punjab has encouraged greater production, supported livelihoods, and strengthened the state economy. Similarly, GST on dairy-based mithai, which is a major centre for Ludhiana and Amritsar, has also been lowered to 5 percent from earlier taxed at 12 per cent, resulting in a drop of nearly 5 percent to 7 percent per kilogram and making mithai more affordable for consumers as well as supporting small sweet makers.
