Festival of harvest, Makar Sankranti is being celebrated in different parts of the country today. Makar Sankranti signals the end of winter and the beginning of longer days. The festival is known with different names in different parts of the country. It is celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Bhogali Bihu in Assam and Poush Sangkranti in West Bengal. This occasion marks the transition of the sun from the zodiac of Sagittarius to Capricorn. As this transition coincides with the sun’s movement from south to north, the festival is dedicated to the solar deity, Surya, and is observed to mark a new beginning.

In Kerala, the hill shrine of Sabarimala will celebrate Makara Vilakku festival today, coinciding with Makara Sankrama night, when devotees will witness the appearance of the Makarajyothi at Ponnambalamedu. Rituals including the procession with Thiruvabharanam, the sacred ornaments of Lord Ayyappa, will be held as part of the celebrations.
Thousands of pilgrims have already reached the area and are camping at various locations. Security has been tightened at the sannidhanam and Makarajyothi view points, with restrictions imposed on pilgrim movement during peak hours. Only 30,000 pilgrims will be allowed through virtual queue today.

During Pongal holidays, lakhs of people gather at the sea shores and it takes several days to clean up the beach. The move aims to protect key tourist attractions as littering also pose public health risks. The civic body has urged the public to use only designated bins and cooperate with sanitation workers. C.A. Balamurali, Chief Engineer, Solid waste management of the Corporation said that violaters will face the penalty of 5 thousand rupees under legal provisions.

People discard old things from their home and make a bonfire from all unwanted goods in front of their houses. Homes are cleaned and the entrances of houses are decorated with Rangoli. As bon fires with plastics are harmful to the environment, the State Pollution Control Board has asked the public to celebrate Bhogi without burning plastics, tyres, tubes in order to protect the environment.

Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has issued instructions to the officers to expedite the white topping work carried out in the city. He informed the media persons that white topping work in Vijayanagar RPC Layout is undertaken on the 1.4 kilometers stretch and so far 645 meters length is completed. The road passes by Railway Parallel Road, West of Chord Road and fifth main road which are the main link roads in the city. He said the officials have been briefed to ensure proper rainwater drainage and side drains along with pedestrian pathways in prescribed standard.

In Telangana, three-day Makar Sankranti festivities commenced with people celebrating Bhogi today with traditional fervour and gaiety. The three-day post-harvest festival is being celebrated across the state but predominant in rural areas as all segments of society celebrate the festival with much pomp. The First day of Sankranti festivities began with Bhogi Mantalu, that is, a bonfire lit early this morning. People along with children have come out to light the bonfire at their courtyards, street corners and cross roads. They burnt their old and unused belongings in the fire as a symbol to get rid of the bad and evil. People are inviting the Sankranthi Lakshmi, a sign of Prosperity, by decorating their houses traditionally with colourful Rangoli, Mango leaves and marigold flowers.
Meanwhile, decorated skies over Hyderabad with colourful kites has become a point of attraction for the people in Capital city following the beginning of the Telangana International Kite Festival last evening at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad. The event is witnessing participation of kite flyers from over 20 countries.

एडमंड हैली (जन्म 8 नवंबर, 1656, हैगरस्टन, शोर्डिच, लंदन के पास – मृत्यु 14 जनवरी, 1742, ग्रीनविच , लंदन के पास) एक अंग्रेज खगोलशास्त्री और गणितज्ञ थे, जिन्होंने सबसे पहले एक धूमकेतु की कक्षा की गणना की, जिसका नाम बाद में उन्हीं के नाम पर रखा गया। उन्हें आइजैक न्यूटन की पुस्तक ‘फिलोसॉफिया नेचुरेलिस प्रिंसिपिया मैथमेटिका’ के प्रकाशन में उनकी भूमिका के लिए भी जाना जाता है । हैली में बड़ी मात्रा में डेटा को सार्थक क्रम में व्यवस्थित करने की क्षमता थी। 1686 में महासागरों पर चलने वाली हवाओं के वितरण को दर्शाने वाला उनका विश्व मानचित्र पहला ऐसा मानचित्र था।

Today is the birth anniversary of Kaifi Azmi, an Indian Urdu poet. He is remembered as the one who brought Urdu literature to Indian motion pictures. He participated in many memorable Mushaira gatherings of the twentieth century. Azmi’s work in films includes working as a lyricist, writer, and actor. He wrote his first lyrics for the film Buzdil, directed by Shaheed Latif and music by SD Burman, released in 1951.

His greatest feat as a writer was Chetan Anand’s Heer Raanjha (1970) wherein the entire dialogue of the film was in verse. Azmi also won great critical accolades for the script, dialogues and lyrics of M.S. Sathyu’s Garam Hawa (1973), based on a story by Ismat Chughtai. Azmi also wrote the dialogues for Shyam Benegal’s Manthan (1976) and Sathyu’s Kanneshwara Rama (1977). As a lyricist and songwriter, though he wrote for numerous films, he will always be remembered for Guru Dutt’s Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Chetan Anand’s Haqeeqat (1964), India’s greatest war film.

For Naunihal (1967), he wrote the song “Meri Aawaz Suno Pyar ka Raaz Suno” sung by Mohammad Rafi. The song is picturised over the funeral procession of former Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru.
