US Attorney General Pam Bondi has said that the Venezuelan president and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the Southern District of New York. The pair have been charged with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and import cocaine and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the US. According to US media reports, the booking process for the couple has already begun. Biometrics, fingerprints and mugshots would have to be taken before their information can be entered into the US Customs and Border Protection system. The couple will also have had to undergo medical checks ahead of their transportation to the Drug Enforcement Agency’s office in New York City, where they will be booked again. Maduro and his wife will then be put on trial, which could happen as soon as Monday.

The Election Commission has invited citizens to submit suggestions for improving the ECINet App, a unified digital platform aimed at enhancing voter services and election-related information. Citizens can share their feedback through the ‘Submit a Suggestion’ tab on the ECINet App till January 10. According to the Election Commission, the trial version of the ECINet App offers improved voter services, quicker availability of polling percentage trends, and publication of Index Cards within 72 hours of the close of polls-an exercise that earlier took several weeks or even months. The app was successfully tested during the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 as well as subsequent bye elections. The Commission said that suggestions received from citizens will be examined and incorporated to further enhance the user experience. The ECINet platform is scheduled for official launch later this month. The app is available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Chennai Metro Rail achieved its highest ever annual ridership with more than 11.19 Crore passengers travelling in 2025. The cumulative ridership since operations began on June 29, 2015 reached 46.73 Crore passengers as of December 31, 2025. CMRL continues to offer a 20 percent discount on ticketing services such as National Common Mobility Cards and digital QR tickets through platforms such as WhatsApp, Paytm, PhonePe and the CMRL mobile app. The discount does not apply to single journey paper QR tickets purchased at counters.

The Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board in collaboration with the local bodies seized about 16 tonnes of banned single use plastics from 9248 shops across the State during a special enforcement drive . The raids began towards the end of December 2025 and fines to the tune of Rs 12 lakh were imposed. Enforcement teams and flying squads have been inspecting street vendor outlets , local shops , wholesale and retail markets, commercial establishments , hotels, festival markets, bus stands, railway stations and airports.

The Karnataka Large and Medium Industries minister M B Patil has announced that the defunct NGEF factory premises in Bengaluru will be developed as a Tree park. Out of 105 acres available, the proposal is to develop Tree park on a 65 acres area. The minister inspected the area yesterday and speaking to the media persons, he said that the first phase of the project will be ready by March. To be developed in four phases at the cost of over 37 crore rupees, it is expected to be completed within the next six months. The Government has already released 11.50 crore rupees. The area already has around 8500 trees of various species and their scientific names have been displayed. The park will house a world class sculpture park and an NGEF museum. The existing structures that once belonged to the NGEF factory will be refurbished to meet the current requirements. Two convention centres with a seating capacity of 15000 each will come up in the existing electric motor sheds. These centres will be given to host meetings, ceremonies, anniversaries, conferences, seminars and other events. A well equipped amphitheatre will be built to host a variety of activities. It will have an entrance plaza, elevated walkways, observation tower, cycling tracks, water cascades, springs and fountains, a food court, children play area, pet friendly zones, toilets and such other essential infrastructure. The Government run KITS will establish an incubation centre for the start ups providing dedicated workspace for the budding entrepreneurs. The IT-BT department will develop a technology innovation museum at a cost of 100 crore rupees. A multi level parking facility capable of accommodating around 7000 vehicles will be constructed on an additional 4.5 acres of factory owned land located outside the compound.

Telangana State Legislative Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution pressing the Centre for immediate clearances for the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation project to solve acute drought in Mahabubnagar and escalating costs caused by prolonged delays. The resolution also sought to correct the alleged historic wrongs, and to get the due share in River Krishna water for Telangana state. The House also resolved that no permissions should be granted for Andhra Pradesh’s proposed Polavaram-Banakacherla project and Nallamalasagar link project until all inter-state water disputes are fully resolved. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has assured the Assembly that Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project will be completed in 3 years and vowed that no injustice will be allowed to happen to the state share in Krishna River water.
The Chief Minister was replying to a short duration discussion held on Krishna River water in the State Legislative Assembly late last night. Emphasising that regional interest overrides political loyalty, he alleged former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao of weakening Telangana’s water rights. He alleged that the groundwork for the controversial Godavari-Banakacherla diversion was laid in 2016 during the previous government, claiming that an admission about surplus waters in River Godavari at a Jal Shakti meeting encouraged the Andhra Pradesh government to pursue the Banakacherla plan. He further charged that Mr Rao agreed to cap Telangana’s share at 299 TMC while allowing Andhra Pradesh to draw 512 TMC, a decision he said gravely disadvantaged the state.

The Telangana Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed four Bills, including the Telangana Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which abolishes the long‑standing “two‑child norm” that barred candidates with more than two children from contesting local body elections.
Introducing the Bill, State Panchayat Raj minister Anasuya Seethakka recalled that the restriction was enacted in 1994 to tackle population surge concerns of the 1980s and 1990s, like threats to food security, jobs and poverty reduction. The minister noted that the total fertility rate in rural Telangana has now declined to 1.7 children per woman – and maintaining the current fertility rate of 1.7 may adversely affect the State’s demographic dividend in the future. The Assembly also passed the Telangana Panchayat Raj (Second Amendment) Bill, 2026, renaming ‘Jaintirumalapoor’ in Wanaparthy mandal as ‘Jayanna Tirumalapur’. Two other Bills introduced by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, the Telangana (Regulation of Appointments to Public Services and Rationalisation of Staff Pattern and Pay Structure) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and its second amendment, were also passed unanimously.

दिल्ली सरकार ने गरीब और वंचित वर्ग को बड़ी राहत देते हुए 15 महीनों के लिए मुफ्त चीनी वितरण को मंजूरी दी। मुख्यमंत्री रेखा गुप्ता की अध्यक्षता में मंत्रिमंडल की बैठक में यह निर्णय लिया गया। इस निर्णय के अंतर्गत अंत्योदय अन्न योजना कार्डधारकों को इसी माह से ब्रांडेड पैकेट में चीनी का वितरण किया जाएगा। मंत्रिमंडल के निर्णय के अनुसार दिल्ली में 65 हज़ार से अधिक परिवार लाभान्वित होंगे।

राष्ट्रीय कैडेट कोर का गणतंत्र दिवस शिविर 2026 का आयोजन दिल्ली कैंट स्थित करियप्पा परेड ग्राउंड में किया जा रहा है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया कि एक महीने तक चलने वाले इस शिविर का उद्देश्य गणतंत्र दिवस पर राष्ट्रीय राजधानी में होने वाले कार्यक्रमों के माध्यम से देश की समृद्ध संस्कृति से परिचित कराना है। इस शिविर में देश भर से कुल 2 हज़ार 406 एनसीसी कैडेट हिस्सा ले रहे है, जिनमें 898 लड़कियां हैं। इस वर्ष जम्मू-कश्मीर और लद्दाख से 127 कैडेट और पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र से 131 कैडेट शिविर में भाग ले रहे हैं। इसके साथ ही यूथ एक्सचेंज प्रोग्राम के अंतर्गत 25 मित्र देशों के कैडेट और अधिकारी भी समारोह का हिस्सा बन रहे हैं। गणतंत्र दिवस परेड के दौरान, एनसीसी कैडेट, फायरिंग और मार्चिंग सहित विभिन्न गतिविधियों में भाग लेंगे। यह शिविर 28 जनवरी को प्रधानमंत्री की रैली के साथ संपन्न होगा। लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल वीरेंद्र वत्स ने बताया कि एनसीसी कैडेटों की कुल संख्या 17 लाख से बढ़कर 20 लाख हो गई है, जिनमें 40 प्रतिशत बालिका कैडेट हैं।

भारत निर्वाचन आयोग ने पश्चिम बंगाल में कानून-व्यवस्था की स्थिति पर साप्ताहिक रिपोर्ट तलब की है। राज्य के सभी जिला अधिकारियों को मुख्य निर्वाचन अधिकारी के कार्यालय से इस संबंध में सतर्क कर दिया गया है। जिला मजिस्ट्रेटों को 5 जनवरी, 2026 से मुख्य निर्वाचन अधिकारी कार्यालय को रिपोर्ट भेजनी होगी और वहां से ये रिपोर्टें निर्वाचन आयोग को भेजी जाएंगी। यह पहल आगामी विधानसभा चुनाव की तैयारियों के तहत की जा रही है। इसके अतिरिक्त, चुनाव से पहले निगरानी को मजबूत करने के लिए 25 नोडल एजेंसियों की नियुक्ति पहले ही की जा चुकी है। ये एजेंसियां अगले सोमवार से काम शुरू करेंगी।

प्रसिद्ध सितार वादक अब्दुल हलीम जफर खान का जन्म 1927 में मध्य प्रदेश में हुआ था। 4 जनवरी, 2017 को उनका निधन हुआ। वे ‘सितार त्रयी’ (Sitar Trinity) के आखिरी जीवित सितार वादक थे जिसमें अन्य उस्ताद विलायत खान और पंडित रविशंकर थे। वे इंदौर घराने के कलाकार थे। उन्होंने वर्ष 1976 में मुंबई में सितार हेतु हलीम अकादमी की स्थापना की थी। ‘मुगल-ए-आजम’, ‘झनक झनक पायल बाजे’, ‘कोहिनूर’ आदि फिल्मों के संगीत इनके सितार वादन से सुसज्जित हैं। उन्हें वर्ष 1970 में पद्मश्री, वर्ष 2006 में पद्म भूषण तथा वर्ष 1987 में संगीत नाटक अकादमी से सम्मानित किया गया था।

हिन्दी सिनेमा के सदाबहार संगीतकारों में शुमार राहुल देव बर्मन की आज पुण्य तिथि है। सिनेमा जगत में पंचम दा के नाम से लोकप्रिय हुए आर डी बर्मन का जन्म 27 जून, 1939 को हुआ था। अद्वितीय सांगीतिक प्रतिभा के कारण इन्हें विश्व के सर्वश्रेष्ठ संगीतकारों में एक माना जाता है। कई संगीतकार इनके काम से सीखते हैं। आर डी बर्मन ने 331 फिल्मों में संगीत दिया। प्रख्यात संगीतकार सचिन देव बर्मन के इकलौते पुत्र और लोकप्रिय गायिका आशा भोसले के पति आर डी बर्मन पंचम दा साउंड के इनोवेटर थे। उन्होंने पहली बार फिल्मों में बोतल, सीटी, बर्तन, सीढ़ियों की आवाज़ और यहां तक कि इंसानी साँसों को भी संगीत का हिस्सा बनाया। यह बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं कि फिल्म “कटी पतंग” का मशहूर गाना “ये शाम मस्तानी” उन्होंने बेहद कम वाद्य यंत्रों में रिकॉर्ड किया था, ताकि भावनाएँ और उभरकर सामने आएँ।
आर डी बर्मन ने 18 फिल्मों में आवाज़ भी दी। भूत बंगला (1965) और प्यार का मौसम (1969) में इन्होंने अभिनय भी किया। सत्तर के दशक के लोकप्रिय संगीतकार पंचम दा ने लता मंगेशकर, आशा भोसले, मोहम्मद रफी और किशोर कुमार जैसे बड़े कलाकारों से अपने फिल्मों में गाने गवाए। कटी पतंग, यादों की बारात, हीरा पन्ना, अनामिका से लेकर 1994 में ‘1942 अ लव स्टोरी तक एक से बढ़कर एक सुरीले संगीत का सृजन किया। वर्ष 1994 में इस महान संगीतकार का देहांत हो गया। नमन उनके संगीत को।

हिन्दी एवं बंगाली फ़िल्मों के प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता प्रदीप को भी हम स्मरण कर रहे हैं, जिनकी आज जयंती है। उन्होंने 1950 और 60 के दशक में पर्दे पर अपनी प्रभावशाली भूमिकाओं से अपनी विशेष पहचान बनायी। विशेषरूप से ऐतिहासिक किरदारों के ज़रिये। उस दौर में फ़िल्मों के लिए जब भी राजा, महाराजा, राजकुमार अथवा नवाब की भूमिका की ज़रूरत होती थी तो प्रदीप कुमार को याद किया जाता था। उनके उत्कृष्ट अभिनय से सजी ‘अनारकली’, ‘ताजमहल’, ‘बहू बेगम’ और ‘चित्रलेखा’ जैसी फ़िल्मों को दर्शक आज भी नहीं भूले हैं। वर्ष 1952 में प्रदर्शित फ़िल्म आंनद मठ में प्रदीप कुमार पहली बार मुख्य अभिनेता की भूमिका में दिखाई दिए। हालांकि इस फ़िल्म में पृथ्वीराज कपूर जैसे महान् अभिनेता भी थे फिर भी प्रदीप कुमार पृथ्वीराज की उपस्थिति में भी दर्शकों के बीच अपने अभिनय की छाप छोड़ने में कामयाब रहे।

1925 को उत्तर प्रदेश के इटावा में जन्मे हिन्दी के महान कवि गोपालदास नीरज अपनी रचनाओं से अमर हो गए। पद्म श्री और पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित नीरज को कवि सम्मेलनों में अपार लोकप्रियता मिली। यही लोकप्रियता उन्हें हिन्दी सिनेमा को समृद्ध करने के लिए बम्बई ले आई। पहली ही फ़िल्म में उनका गीत – कारवाँ गुजर गया गुबार देखते रहे बेहद लोकप्रिय हुआ। और फिर फिल्मी गीत रचनाओं का सिलसिला – मेरा नाम जोकर, शर्मीली और प्रेम पुजारी जैसी अनेक चर्चित फिल्मों में कई वर्षों तक जारी रहा। हालांकि बम्बई की ज़िन्दगी से भी उनका मन बहुत जल्द उचट गया और वे फिल्मी दुनिया से अलविदा कहकर फिर अलीगढ़ वापस लौट आये।
