BJP MLA Ganesh Gaonkar has been elected as the new Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly. He won the election by securing 31 votes, while his opponent from the Congress, Elton D’Costa, received only 7 votes.

The Speaker’s post became vacant following the resignation of Ramesh Tawadkar, who stepped down to be inducted into the Goa cabinet as a minister.
