In Bangladesh, at least 12 people were killed and several others injured after a train collided with a passenger bus at a railway level crossing in Cumilla today. The accident took place at the Padua Bazar crossing in Cumilla along the busy Dhaka-Chattogram highway when a Dhaka-bound train struck a bus that had entered the tracks.
Rescue teams comprising police, fire service, army personnel and Red Crescent members carried out operations at the scene following the crash. The injured were rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Train movement on the Dhaka-Chattogram route remained suspended for about three hours.
Authorities have formed multiple probe committees to investigate the cause of the accident, focusing on possible negligence and safety lapses at the level crossing. Two gatemen have already been suspended.
The government announced financial assistance of 1 lakh taka each for the families of the deceased. The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over railway crossing safety in Bangladesh.
