In Bangladesh, the police have arrested the prime accused in the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment worker, in Bhaluka of Mymensingh. The arrest comes amid continued investigation into the brutal killing that sparked international outrage. Mymensingh police arrested Imam Yasin Arafat, who worked as an imam at a mosque in the Sheikhbari area, from Dhaka’s Demra area on Wednesday afternoon, said Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun.
According to police, Yasin, 25, played a key role in instigating and leading the mob attack on December 18. Investigators said Yasin gathered people by chanting slogans near the gate of the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory and incited them to assault Dipu. The victim was allegedly tied with a rope, dragged to the Mastarbari area, and set on fire. “Yasin directly led the incident,” ASP Mamun said, adding that his political affiliation could not be confirmed.
So far, police have arrested 21 people in connection with the case, and nine of them have given confessional statements before a court. Officials said Yasin, 25, is a permanent resident of Bhaluka. After the incident, he went into hiding and reportedly took shelter at different madrasas in Demra, later joining Sufafa Madrasa while concealing his identity.
Dipu Chandra Das, 25, was lynched and his body burnt after being hung from a tree near his workplace at Dubaliapara on allegations of hurting religious sentiments. However, investigators said they found no evidence supporting the allegation. Dipu’s family also stated that he did not use an Android phone or social media platforms.
