In Bangladesh, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman submitted his nomination papers today for the Dhaka-17 constituency on the final day for filing nominations for the 13th national parliamentary election.
However, in another event, armed attackers broke up an anti-extortion protest by traders in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar, heightening tensions in Dhaka. About 150 to 200 traders formed a human chain in front of the Karwan Bazar Kitchen Market to protest alleged extortion when the attack occurred, triggering a brief chase and counterchase.
Protesters alleged that an expelled member secretary of the Tejgaon unit of Jubo Dal has been demanding extortion from local traders since August last year. Police intervened and brought the situation under control, authorities said.
