In Bangladesh, at least 20 people were killed and 171 were injured when an Air Force training jet crashed into Milestone College campus in Dhaka this afternoon. The dead include the pilot of the aircraft.
Our correspondent in Dhaka reported that a Bangladesh Air Force F7 aircraft crashed into a building of the College in Dhaka’s Uttara around 1:30 pm. Bangladesh Army and fire service started rescue operations.
An emergency hotline has been launched at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Dhaka following the aircraft crash. The hotline number is 01949-043697.
The Bangladesh government has declared a one-day state mourning day following the incident. Bangladesh’s F-7 is a modern variant of China’s Chengdu F-7, itself modelled on the Soviet MiG-21. Its production ceased after China delivered the last of 16 units of F-7 BGIs to Bangladesh in 2013..
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness at the loss of lives in a tragic air crash in Dhaka. In a social media post, Mr Modi gave his condolences to the bereaved families. He prayed for the swift recovery of those injured. The Prime Minister added that India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance
