Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today announced that military troops will be deployed to assist communities affected by days of severe flooding in the Northern Territory. In a post on the social media platform, Mr Albanese said the government has approved support from personnel of the Australian Defence Force to aid recovery efforts in communities around Katherine, located about 270 km southeast of the territory’s capital, Darwin.
The Northern Territory has been experiencing severe flooding since the beginning of this month. According to reports by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Katherine town in the Northern Territory is witnessing its worst flooding in nearly three decades, forcing the evacuation of several nearby remote communities.
Floodwaters have also inundated homes along the Darwin River and caused extensive damage to rural properties, while rising water levels in the Daly River have reached record highs.
