In Assam, polling is scheduled to be held in a single phase for all 126 Legislative Assembly constituencies. Khowang LAC is one of the prominent and prestigious constituencies in Assam.
“The 89 No. Khowang Legislative Assembly Constituency is one of the 126 constituencies of Assam. Polling for the upcoming election is scheduled to be held on 9th April. The Khowang is a key constituency of the Dibrugarh district, and it is predominantly a rural seat. Following the 2023 delimitation exercise, the erstwhile Moran constituency was renamed as Khowang with the addition or shifting of some villages from the earlier constituency. In the current Assembly election, five candidates are in the fray from Khowang. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Chakradhar Gogoi, who is contesting against Lurinjyoti Gogoi, President of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, a constituent party of the Congress-led opposition alliance. Prabhakar Das and Biju Dowarah are contesting as independent candidates. Following the 2023 delimitation exercise, the Khowang LAC has also undergone changes in its population. According to the Election Commission of India, Khowang has over 157,000 voters; over 81,000 are female and over 76,000 are male. Additionally, there are 4 transgender voters across 206 polling stations. In the 2021 Assembly election, there were six candidates in the fray, including BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi, Pranjal Ghatowar of the Congress, Sanjib Changmai of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, and three independent candidates. Chakradhar Gogoi won the election with over 49% of the votes. During that election, voter turnout was over 8%.
