Assam: Earthquake and cyclonic storm hit Cachar district

In Silchar, the Cachar district was struck by a dual natural disaster today. At around 9:21 AM, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 with its epicentre in Irongmara struck, triggering widespread panic across the region. This was the second tremor within a week, with the first one triggered on 7th of April with 4.9 magnitude.

Within hours of the seismic tremor, a powerful cyclonic storm lashed the Barak Valley at around 1 PM. The storm, characterised by gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and hailstorms, caused extensive damage-uprooting numerous decades-old trees, snapping power lines, and damaging residential structures in Silchar town, Katigorah, and Udharbond. Emergency response teams have been deployed on a war footing to address the trail of destruction.
