Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has won with a larger majority in the federal election. The Labour Party has secured at least 84 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives. The Liberal-National Party has locked about 33, with votes still being counted.
Albanese has become the first Australian prime minister in 21 years to lead a political party to two consecutive election victories. He has promised modest tax cuts, cheaper health care and new homes for first-time buyers. His party also wants to replace fossil fuel-fired electricity generators with renewable energy sources as part of its efforts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The leader of the opposition Liberal-National coalition, Peter Dutton, has conceded defeat.
