In Assam, a large agitated crowds burned a police vehicle and pelted stones at vehicles carrying accused for the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg at Mushalpur in the Baksa district today. The police had to fire bullets in the air to disperse the huge angry crowds for a safe transfer of the accused into the Baksa district jail.
Security has been stepped up at the newly built Baksa District Jail as the five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case were shifted there following their remand to judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, Kamrup (Metro), today. For security reasons, the accused were moved from Guwahati to the relatively isolated Baksa jail in Mushalpur, which reportedly had no prisoners at the time. The District Jail was inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 21 this year.
The decision to move the accused to Baksa has sparked public outrage, with thousands of Garg’s fan gathered outside the court in protest, alleging that the move is an attempt to extend preferential treatment to those involved.
The five accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, along with Sandeepan Garg and two personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya – were remanded to judicial custody today after the conclusion of their CID remand.
