In Bangladesh, a gun attack on Wednesday evening during the early campaign of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Chattogram for the forthcoming national election has left one person dead and at least two others wounded, including the party’s candidate.
The attack occurred around 5:30 pm in Chattogram city, as the BNP candidate, Ershad Ullah, and his supporters were conducting campaign activities.
According to police and hospital reports, Ershad Ullah sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to Evercare Hospital where his condition was described as stable but still under treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Sarwar Hossain Babla, aged around 40-48, a man reportedly facing multiple criminal charges.
Initial investigation by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) suggests that the primary target of the attack was Babla, not Ershad Ullah.
The shooting comes at the start of campaigning for the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, scheduled for early February next year, and it underscores concerns about the security of political events in Bangladesh.
Leaders of the BNP have accused forces opposed to the party of orchestrating the violence to disrupt their campaign momentum, while police emphasize ongoing investigation and manhunt for the attackers.
