All England Badminton Championships began today in Birmingham. India’s top mixed doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila registered India’s first win in the tournament with a 21-17, 21-19 victory over Malaysians Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin to progress to the second round. In Mens singles also, Lakshya Sen defeated world No. 1 and defending champion Shi Yu Qi of China 23-21, 19-21, and 21-17 in the Opening Round this evening.
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will unfortunately miss out on the action in the tournament as she has returned home after being stranded at Dubai airport due to the prevailing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
