All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has operationalisedthe Ashray facility for patients waiting outside the hospital to avail OPD services. The initiative, which has been started with the support of the Central Reserve Police Force, reflects AIIMS’ commitment to patient-centric care in addressing the challenges of overcrowding and discomfort during overnight waits for OPD services.
Patients waiting outside the hospital at night are transported to the Ashray facility, and each patient is issued a token number ensuring that the same sequence is maintained the next day during OPD registrations. The facility has a capacity of around 250 persons, which is currently being utilised to its fullest. By offering shelter, food, and organised registration, the initiative has significantly reduced patient discomfort and improved the overall hospital experience.
Talking to the media, AIIMS Director, Dr M Srinivas, said that free food, blankets, and access to hygienic toilets are provided to both patients and their attendants in this Ashray facility. He said, Vishram Sadan facility is also operational at the main campus of AIIMS, Trauma Centre and NCI Jhajjar campus with a total capacity of one thousand 500 beds.
