4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near East Coast of Australia Today

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the east coast of Australia today, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. The quake which hit Queensland state was 10km deep and the epicentre is the rural town of Kilkivian, about 170km north-west of the state capital Brisbane, the EMSC said.

There is no threat of tsunami to Queensland, Australia’s weather forecaster said in an alert on its website. A spokesperson from state-run energy distribution company Energex said that around 11 thousand properties were without power after the quake.
