21st Storm of 2025 Pacific Typhoon Season Hits Guangdong with 151 kph Winds

Typhoon Matmo, the 21st named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, made landfall at 2:50 p.m. local time today along the eastern coast of Xuwen County in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. The typhoon had maximum sustained wind speeds of 151 kph. 

Authorities in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan launched top-level emergency responses. Over 197,000 people were evacuated in Hainan, more than 150,000 in Guangdong, and 26,000 tourists were cleared from Weizhou Island. Coastal ferry routes were suspended, and nearly 900 ships were secured across the region.

The typhoon is moving west-northwest and is expected to weaken after crossing into the Beibu Gulf later today. Heavy rain and storms are forecast. Matmo arrives during China’s National Day holiday travel rush, with an estimated 2.36 billion trips expected over the eight days.
