11 Killed, 14 Injured in Mass Shooting at Pretoria Bar

In South Africa, a mass shooting at an unlicensed bar left eleven people dead, including children. Another fourteen people were wounded, police said yesterday in the South African city of Pretoria.

Police said at least three gunmen entered a hostel bar around 4:15 a.m. and opened fire on a group of patrons. Ten victims died at the scene, while two others died in the hospital. The motive remains unclear, and officers are searching for the suspects.

South Africa continues to struggle with gun violence. The country recorded more than 26,000 homicides in 2024, averaging over 70 deaths a day, with illegal firearms driving most killings.

Despite strict gun laws, mass shootings at unlicensed bars known as shebeens or taverns have surged. Police say they shut down over 11,000 illegal taverns and arrested 18,000 people for unlawful liquor sales between April and September.
