Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, today said that women’s participation in India’s maritime sector has increased by 340% since 2020. The Minister was speaking at the 10th Indian Ocean Dialogue in New Delhi. He said that through initiatives like Sagar Mein Samman, the government is advancing dignity, inclusion and leadership opportunities for women in the maritime sector. Mr Sonowal positioned the surge in women’s participation within India’s broader maritime vision, combining economic growth with social empowerment. The Minister said that India is actively shaping a secure, inclusive and prosperous Indian Ocean Region under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He added that the country remains committed to working with all partners to advance a safe, secure and stable Indian Ocean Region.
