In the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal, approximately 15 lakh 53 thousand dead voters’ names have been identified. Six lakhs 45 thousand enumeration forms have been digitised, and seven lakhs 65 thousand enumeration forms have been distributed. Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal Manoj Kumar Agarwal will chair a virtual review meeting on SIR today with the District Election Officers of the State.
The Election Commission of India has asked the Director General of Police of West Bengal to ensure the safety and security of the BLOs and other personnels associated with the ongoing SIR process in the state. The Commission also sought a report from the Kolkata Police Commissioner on the issue of the security of the CEO of West Bengal and other officials at the CEO’s office following a group of BLOs staging a protest in front of the CEO’s office in Kolkata earlier this week.
Amidst the ongoing SIR process in West Bengal, reports of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants leaving India through the borders of West Bengal came to light. BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress of not cooperating with the Election Commission. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the Election Commission is depending upon state machinery, but state machinery is indulging in fraud. He accused TMC is trying to include names of Bangladeshi intruders in the voter list.
