US President Donald Trump has announced a 10 percent import tariff on goods from eight European countries, starting in February, citing their opposition to US control of Greenland.
In a social media post, Trump said the tariff would take effect from February and apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.
He added that the levy would be raised to 25 percent from 1st June if no agreement is reached on what he described as the complete and total purchase of Greenland by the USA.
President Trump said, it is time for Denmark to give back, as world peace is at stake. He claimed China and Russia are interested in Greenland, but only the United States can play in this game.
The US president described the situation as very dangerous for the safety, security, and survival of our planet, and accused the countries involved of creating risks that are not sustainable. He called for strong measures to protect global peace and security.
Trump also referred to the Golden Dome defence system, saying it can only operate at full potential if Greenland is included.
