Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi today flagged off mobile vans selling onions at a subsidised price of 24 rupees per kg in Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Joshi asserted government is committed towards the welfare of farmers and consumers. Highlighting the prioritisation of stability in food prices, the Minister noted that retail inflation in July fell to 1.55 percent, the lowest in nearly eight years.
The Minister said that the calibrated and targeted disposal of onions from the buffer is an integral part of the government’s efforts to control food inflation and maintain a stable price regime.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, in a statement, said that the sale is being carried out through National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (NCCF), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and Kendriya Bhandar outlets and vans as part of the government’s calibrated release of buffer stock to check food inflation.
