India and six other countries are expected to drive global city population growth, adding more than 500 million urban residents between 2025 and 2050, according to the United Nations. The World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 report highlights that cities now house 45 percent of the world’s 8.2 billion people. India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia will contribute over half of the projected increase in city dwellers. India and China alone account for nearly 1.2 billion city residents. Mega-cities have grown from eight in 1975 to 33 in 2025, with 19 in Asia, and are projected to reach 37 by 2050. The UN emphasizes that sustainable urban planning in these countries is critical for global development and climate goals.
