In Tamil Nadu, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), C. Joseph Vijay, was sworn in as the Chief Minister this morning. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Nehru Indoor Stadium at 10 AM. State Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to Mr Vijay. Along with him, nine Ministers were also sworn in. Among those who took oath as Cabinet Ministers were KG Arunraj, Aadhav Arjuna, N Anand, Selvi S Keerthana and Dr TK Prabhu.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Rahul Gandhi and several personalities from the Tamil film industry were present.
Mr Vijay, with the backing of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, secured the support of 120 MLAs-elect in the 234-member House. He made history as the first Chief Minister of the state since 1967 who does not come from either the DMK or the AIADMK.
According to a Lok Bhavan press release, the Governor has directed Mr Vijay to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before Wednesday (May 13).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Chief of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, TVK, C. Joseph Vijay, after taking the oath of office, also took charge as the Chief Minister of the State today. He went to Fort. St. George, where the Chief Minister’s office is located and signed the files declaring his takeover. During his address after taking the oath as a Chief Minister at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, Chief Minister Vijay appealed to the people to remain confident about his Government and said that he will enable smooth and transparent governance to all.
In the files that he signed declaring the Oath of Office at Secretariat, Chief Minister Vijay signed the files enabling 200 units of free power to every family, the setting up of a special unit for women’s safety and a special unit to handle drug smuggling.
The Assembly session will be held tomorrow for the swearing-in of the MLAs. Karuppaiah, elected from the Sholavandan Constituency, has been appointed as the Pro Tempore Speaker. He will swear in the new MLAs and handle the election of the permanent Speaker after swearing in all the elected MLAs. The newly sworn-in Government also has to prove the majority on or before Wednesday
