Domestic benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty ended in negative territory amid mixed global cues and profit-booking in the frontline stocks.
At close, the Sensex tumbled 1272 points at 84,299, while the Nifty plunged 368 points to settle at 25,810. Both the indices fell over 1.4 per cent.
In the NSE, 160 companies hit their 52-week high, and 72 hit their 52-week low.
In the broader market at BSE, the MidCap index ended 0.28 per cent lower, while SmallCap was slightly up 0.07 per cent.
In the Sensex index, 25 out of 30 companies ended in negative territory.
The top laggards today were, Reliance and Axis Bank tanked more than three per cent, Mahindra and Mahindra fell 2.7 per cent and ICICI Bank declined more than two and a half per cent.
Conversely, the top gainers were, JSW Steel surged nearly three per cent, NTPC, as well as Tata Steel, which added more than one per cent and Asian Paints increased by more than half per cent.
In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 18 out of 20 sectors logged losses.
The top laggards today were, Auto plunged nearly two per cent, Bankex and Realty shed over 1.8 per cent and Financial Services lost 1.4 per cent.
Meanwhile, the only two gainers today were Metal which rose more than one per cent and Commodities gained more than half per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as out of 4,193 Companies, shares of 1,819 advanced, 2,223 declined and 151 remained unchanged.
