Sensex and Nifty End Higher After Midday Dips

Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, started the session with marginal gains but soon lost momentum and traded in the red. However, in the latter half, the indices rebounded and closed with gains today. The Sensex increased 336 points or 0.4 per cent to close at 83 thousand 871, while the Nifty advanced 121 points or 0.47 per cent to settle at 25 thousand 695. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed mixed. The Mid-Cap index gained 0.2 per cent, while the Small-Cap index dipped around 0.1 per cent.

In the Sensex pack, 24 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, Bharat Electronics Limited surged over two and half a per cent, Mahindra and Mahindra added 2.4 per cent and Adani Ports increased 2.1 per cent. In the top laggards, Bajaj Finance plunged around 7.4 per cent, Bajaj Finserv shed nearly 6.3 per cent and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited fell over 0.7 per cent.

Across sectoral indices at the BSE, 18 out of 21 sectors ended in positive territory. Among the leading gainers, Services rose around 1.7 per cent, Telecommunication advanced 1.6 per cent, and Focused IT as well as Capital Goods, both increased 1.2 per cent. In contrast, among the decliners, Healthcare fell over 0.3 per cent, and Financial Services as well as Realty, both dipped 0.2 per cent.

The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2,245 companies declined, 1,936 advanced, and 182 remained unchanged.
